Acting Space: Transforming Audience into Actor in Space

How can spatial design turn the audience into an actor?

This topic comes from my interest and background in both architecture and theatre. Theatre artists always seek ways to make their performances more engaging. Nowadays, some directors incorporate audience participation. This research started from the idea of “involving the audience in the theatre.”

The goal was to make participants in space feel like actors by experiencing different concepts and acting within the space. It began with “Changing positions” and continued with concepts like “Being framed,” “Sound creator,” and “Being seen.” I combined these into one design considering shape, colour, light, and shadow to create an interactive space.

To conclude, by changing positions, being behind frames, influencing sound, and being seen, even those without theatre experience can feel like actors and be spotlighted.

How does a stage turn the audience to an actor?

In the magical world of theater, stories unfold through captivating performances, drawing audiences into a realm of imagination. While traditional theater has long been cherished for its timeless appeal, there's now a growing desire for more immersive and engaging experiences where spectators become active participants in the narrative. This desire has sparked a new era of performance arts, prompting research into interactive stage design.

By exploring innovative ideas like wooden staircases, video projectors, and red curtains, this study aims to blur the line between passive observation and active involvement, inviting audiences to use their senses to contribute to the unfolding story. As we delve deeper into this research, we confront the challenge of engaging modern audiences accustomed to traditional theater setups, prompting a shift towards more dynamic and interactive performances. This exploration not only transforms the way we experience theater but also lays the groundwork for a fresh approach to storytelling, blending old traditions with innovative concepts to create a rich and ever-evolving theatrical expression.
